PURPOSE:To easily obtain titania hydrate fiber by melting a starting material mixture of general formula M2O.nTiO2, cooling the melt to form a fibrous substance, and acid treating the substance. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal titanate or a starting material mixture thereof represented by general formula M2O.nTiO2 (where M is Na, K, Rb or Cs and n=1-5) is melted by heating to a temp. above the m.p. While cooling the melt a crystalline fibrous substance is formed, and it is treated with water, mineral acid, org. acid or a mixture thereof to extract M2O. Thus, titania hydrate fiber at least the surface of which has composition TiO2 nH2O(0<n<=5) is obtd. By heat dehydrating the fiber at <=250 deg.C, titania glass fiber is obtd. In addition, by heating both the fibers at 250-1200 deg.C, titania fiber is obtd. |
