MANUFACTURE OF POROUS GLASS

PURPOSE:To manufacture porous glass having a uniform micropore distribution by dipping phase separated glass having soft phase easy to elute and hard phase free from elution in a hot aqueous soln. contg. a specified component to elute the soft phase. CONSTITUTION:A glass block having a uniform composition such as Na2O-K2O- B2O-3- SiO2 is prepared and phase separated into the above-mentioned soft and hard phases by heat treatment. Phase separated glass 13 is placed on holder 12 of container 11 made of quartz glass or the like. Eluting soln. 14 contg. one of C6 monosaccharides such as sorbitol, dextrose, invert sugar, fructose and mannitol or a complex of boric acid with an alpha-diol type polyol such as glycerol is poured into container 11 inlet 14'. To soln. 14 may be added an alkali such as NH4OH or Na2CO3. The soln. 14 is then heated to about 95 deg.C with heater 18 to elute the soft phase. Thus, porous glass is obtd.
