A book block consisting of inside pages (12) and end papers (13) is laid on the receiving rail (1) and transported onwards by dogs (14). Suction elements (5, 6) are arranged on both sides of the receiving rail (1) and are subjected to the action of suction air. Guide rails (8, 9) are provided with grooves (10, 11). When the front edge of the book block (12, 13) arrives in the region of the suction elements (5, 6), the end paper (13) is deflected by the latter away from the inside pages (12) and into the groove (10, 11) of the guide rails (8, 9). This device requires little space and operates without maintenance. <IMAGE>
