The material consists of grains of expanded cork bonded by a concrete formed by cement and moistened with the aid of an emulsion (I) of a natural or synthetic elastomer resin (Ia). The concrete surrounds each grain or granule of cork to form a mass of low density, which is moulded into a desired shape, esp. to make panels. The panels are pref. made by placing dry expanded cork granules in a mixer together with twice their wt. of cement. After homogeneous mixing, an aq. emulsion (I) contg. 20% of resin (Ia) is added, followed by moulding. Used esp. to make rigid panels with density 400-800 kg/cu.m.; compression strength above 20 kg/sq.cm; and a coefft. of heat transfer below 0.5 for a panel 30 cm thick.
|
