Electrochemical etching of metal surfaces uses a polyester foil as the stencil in which the symbols to be marked are embodied. The foil is perforated along the desired marking lines in holes of small diameter. with a spacing narrow enough to result in a continuous line marking. The preferred hole diameter is 0.1 to 0.4 mm (0.3 mm) and the distance between their edges equals the dia. Stencils can be produced at low cost and are simple to use. The high mechanical strength and wear resistance of polyester ensure a long life.
