Crankcase for IC engine - has insert with diagonal hole for entry of oil dipstick to simplify machining

An oil sump (6) is attached to the underside of the engine crankcase (1). An oil dipstick (5) projects into the sump from outside the crankcase at an angle. A hole (2) is machined in the side of the crankcase with its axis along one of the principal machining directions of the crankcase. It is closed by an insert (3) which has a hole (4) through it at an angle to the sides which fit into the hole in the crankcase. The oil dipstick enters through the hole in the insert. The use of the insert reduces the number of directions in which the crankcase has to be machined and thus reduces the complexity of automatic transfer machines used in mass production.
