<p>An aggregate of spherical or hemispherical shape having a void centre and a single cavity in the outer surface communicating with the void centre is prepd. by (a) forming droplets of a slurry of distinct particles of a first solid suspended in liq. (b) dropping the slurry droplets onto a particle bed of a second solid so that the total droplet is not immersed in the powder and the suspending liq. is (partially) removed from the slurry droplet to form an aggregate of distinct particles of the first solid. The particles of amphora are useful as catalyst carriers as they have a large exposed surface and problems of diffusion through the catalyst are reduced. They are esp. useful in fixed bed catalytic reactors. Coherent, attrition resistant aggregates may be formed.</p> |
