Rolling plug as conveyed in a plug rolling mill, by collecting in a holder which is then moved towards the inlet guide in front of the rolls at a speed which is sufficient to impart motion to the plug along a straight conveying path which is located at an angle to the rolling line; on reaching the inlet guide, the holder is abruptly arrested so the plug is ejected under its own speed and moves to the front end of the mandrel in the rolling mill. The rolling plug may be conveyed along its path by either a traction cable or a piston cylinder unit actuating the plug holder which is pref. accelerated to a speed of 2-5 m/second. Automatic location of the plug on the end of the mandrel without the use of manual labour which can be extremely strenuous in view of the heat and the dust.
