Prepn. of 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-benzofuran (I) comprises heating orthomethallylpyrocatechol (II) or orthomethallyloxy-phenol (III) in the presence of water and opt. an organic solvent. (I) is used to prepare 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methylcarbamate (carbofuran), a known insecticide.
