The open end of the tubular knitted material is closed, after the knitting process, by a seam which is elastic and does not match the stitches of the knit. The process ensures that the stitches are held, and will not run, while allowing the fabric to be joined by a conventional chain stitch sewing machine. This means that knitwear garment sections can be assembled cheaply with unskilled labour.
