A bogie (3) carries an electric motor (1,2). When the rotor (1) is accelerated there is a reaction torque (E) on the stator. This produces forces (a,b) on the front and rear axles which have components (d,f) in the forward direction. A second motor mounted on the underside of the bogie produces additional forces in the same direction, if it is decelerated as the first motor is accelerated. The action can be made continuous if the motors are rotated about the horizontal axis, while being successively accelerated and decelerated. A motor is always above the axis, while being accelerated, and below it during deceleration.
