PURPOSE:To prepare a large amount of a corresponding 9alpha-hydroxysteroid efficiently, by cultivating a microorganism belonging to the genus Rhodococcus using a 4- ene-3-one-based steroid as a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A steroid with a 1-3C alkyl or alkylidene group, which has a 4-ene-3-one structure in an A-ring and may have a hydroxy or substituent group at the 17th position of a D-ring, is used as a substrate in the cultivation of a microorganism belonging to the genus Phodococcus to give a corresponding 9alpha-hydroxysteroid. The hydroxylation of 9alpha position by microorganism may be carried out in any condition, in propagating cells or in suspending cells. Whether the propagating or suspending cells may be used, the reaction temperature is usually 20-40 deg.C, most preferably 28-37 deg.C. The pH of a reaction solution (buffer solution, medium, etc.) is usually 5-10, and preferably 6-9. |
