Anhydrous sodium dithionite with is useful as a strong reducing agent in various industries, was manufd. by reacting sulfur dioxide and sodium formate with an alkali, as sodium carbonate or acid sodium carbonate, in the presence of D M F. Thus, sodium formate was melted in the water, heated with sodium carbonate or acid sodium carbonate. The product reacted with the soln. in which sulfur dioxide was melted in D M F, filtered in a N or CO2 atmosphere, then washed with MeOH and dried to give the final product.
