In the appliance a coaxial draft tube (8) is arranged which in its lower part has a gas supply (10) and in its upper part a gas discharge (7). For the purpose of better utilisation of a gas employed in the process, the draft tube (8) is charged with sharp-edged chips (16) of metal or plastic. Within the draft tube, fittings (17) which are permeable for the gas and the liquid are provided for dividing the draft tube into two or more sections in order thus to prevent compression of the chips. <IMAGE>
