Coated multilayer military armour plate - has internal layer of less solid material with high degree of elasticity

The coated armour plate protects against armour-piercing missiles, partic. of the inertia, compression-head or hollow-charge type. On the inside of the plate (1) is a layer (3) of material which is less solid than the plate. The material is typically of specific gravity between 1.0 and 1.6, and has a high degree of elasticity before fracture; it is closely bonded to the plate. The material concerned can be elastomer, and it may be secured to the plate by a coating of elastomer adhesive(2).
