An automated focusing system for a camera using astigmatism phenomina includes a polarizer (5) arranged on the center line of the camera lens comprising an objective lens (1) and zoom lenses (2,3,4), photo diodes (7-10) mounted at the focus of an astigmatism lens (6), an comparator (11) having two input tabs (+,-), each connected to the pair of symmetrically arranged photo diodes (7&9, 8&10), and a driving motor (12) for the objective lens. The light split by the polarizer is reflected by mirror (5') and entered along the sagital surface into the inclined astigmatism lens.
