PURPOSE:To reduce the resistance to grinding and the roughness of the surface of a ground workpiece, by strongly pushing a crushing roller on the surface of an abrasive grain layer to crush and remove the surface portion of the layer to dress it, and thereafter using a tooling grindstone to true up the cutting edges of the abrasive grain layer. CONSTITUTION:In a dressing process, a crushing roll 6 is urged in a direction D so as to be strongly pushed on an abrasive grain layer 51 to crush and remove the surface portion of the matrix 2 of the layer, protrude the ends 1a of CBN abrasive grains 1 from the matrix and form chip pockets P around the ends 1a. A tooling process is then performed by rotary diamond truer 100 so that the surfaces 10a of the ends 1a of the CBN abrasive grains 1 which are protruded from the matrix 2 and trued up nearly on the same plane. As a result, the resistance to the grinding of a workpiece by the hard abrasive grain layer 51 of a grindstone 5 and the roughness of the ground surface of the workpiece are reduced.
