PURPOSE:To dispense with high electric power for strong excitation and make an atomic osicllator compact, by providing the lamp cell of the atomic oscillator with a lamp lighting start electrode in addition to an excitation coil for the retention of the lighting of a lamp so that the electrode is located near the lamp. CONSTITUTION:An atomic oscillator is composed of a light microwave unit 11, a voltage control crystal oscillator 12 and a frequency multiplication synthesizer 13. In the light microwave unit 11, a lamp cell 1, an excitation coil 2, a reflector 3, an exciter 4, a filter cell 5, a cavity resonator 6, a gas cell 7, a light detector 3, an amplifier 9 and a frequency multiplier 10, etc. are provided. An excitation coil 32 for maintining lighting, which is connected to a lamp exciter 34, is wound around the lamp cell 31 as shown in Fig. Besides, a lighting start electrode 3 whose one end is grounded is provided as a coil near the coil 32. High-frequency power is applied to the coil 32 to generate an electric field between both the coils 32, 33. After the cell 31 is lighted on, its lighting is maintained by the coil 32 only. |
