<p>Fermentation takes place in a fixed base chamber fitted with a cover which rises to accomodate an increasing vol. of gas. Both air and liq. can be circulated through the fermenting material. A vertical chimney is positioned centrally to extend upwards through the fermenting material from an integral, inverted funnel which has perforations leading into the fermentation space. A single impeller for circulating, alternatively, both air and liq. is housed inside the chimney and suspended from the cover which carrier the drive for the impeller. The drive to the impeller is pref. reversible so that air can be drawn down or liq. driven up the chimney. Prodn. of methane by fermentation of organic waste matter. Circulation of fermentation liq. and evenly spread degassing of material is achieved without loss of heat. Initial air circulation augments temp. and promotes the generation of methane. A single impeller, e.g. turbine, pump, is used for both liq. and air circulation.</p> |
