The medical appliance includes a lamp (20) centred in a parabolic reflector (21) which has a peripheral collar (22). The reflector is supported at the wider end of a tapering tube (31) with a conical cover (10) lying over the front of the reflector. The cover extends to a slightly larger diameter than the tube so as to fit over and be fastened to the tube. The cover has a small (5 mm) opening in its centre at the apex of the cone allowing radiation to be applied to a small area of tissue. Behind the reflector and support tube is a handle (40) incorporating a push-button switch (41). A flexible cable (42) connects the lamp to a suitable low voltage supply. The lamp is pref. an iodine lamp providing about 20 watts of power.
