The electromagnetic assembly consists of a cylindrical coil comprising a single layer of conducting wire windings, the wire in the first and last few turns having a round cross-section and the wire in the intermediate section having a flattened cross-section, the long direction being normal to the central axis of the coil. The intermediate group of windings forms about 95% of the total number of windings on the coil. From the supply reel (33) the round wire (35) is fed through a pair of pressure rollers (37), the position of which may be adjusted by the movement of an electromagnet (41). After leaving the pressure rollers, the wire passes through a wire guide (43) driven along the side of the wire coil by a lead screw geared to the motor (29) which drives the spindle (27) of the coil former.
