Turbocharger for reciprocating IC engine - has centrifugal clutch between turbine and compressor to improve low load engine performance

The turbocharger has a turbine casing (1) separated from a compressor casing (2) by a bearing housing (3). The turbine wheel (4) is mounted on a shaft (5) which is carried in bearings (6) in the bearing housing. The compressor rotor (7) is mounted on a bearing (9) on the shaft so that it can rotate independently. The back of the compressor rotor carries one half (14) of a centrifugal clutch. The other half (11), with centrifugal weights (12), is attached to the turbine shaft. The clutch remains disengaged until the turbine has reached a predetermined minimum speed. Below this the turbine imposes no load on the engine.
