A nonconsumable electrode for melting metals and alloys comprises a hollow cylindrical body having a detachable tip made in the form of a body of revolution coaxial with the body. A solenoid has its lower end located within the tip. A partition is coaxially mounted within the body to define a coolant passageway between the body walls and the partition. The arcing surface of the electrode can be subjected to intensive cooling. The electrode dia. can be decreased and the thermal efficiency of the furnace increased. Stabilised arcing is achieved with low specific heat flows passing through the arc spot.
