Battery charger for charging of a battery of arbitrary pole voltage. Rectified alternating voltage is available at a pair of output terminals 1, 2 between which the battery 3 is connected in series with a regulating element 6 which regulates the charge current through the battery. A control element 7 detects the voltage across the current through the regulating element 6 and is arranged to open the regulating element when the rectified alternating voltage across the regulating element exceeds the battery voltage and the current through the regulating element falls below a predetermined, essentially constant value. In this way, the battery is charged with two current pulses per half- period of the rectified alternating voltage. A polarity- sensitive element 12 is hooked up across the battery so as to enable the regulating element 6 only when the battery is connected with a predetermined polarity between the connection terminals 4, 5 of the battery. The regulating, the controlling, and the polarity-sensing elements 6, 7 and 12 respectively can be doubled to form a "partial" battery charger, which is connected in parallel with a corresponding second "partial" battery charger across the connection terminals 4, 5 of the battery 3 and which is fed with a rectified alternating voltage of opposite polarity, so that the connection of a battery 3 to the connection terminals 4, 5 is polarity- independent. <IMAGE> |
