The electric vacuum cleaner removes the dust from carpets and upholstery. It incorporates a second pipe parallel to the first pipe (9,11) with flow in the reverse direction so that the dust is stirred up and more easily sucked up. A turbine (2) conveys pressurised air to the suction brush (15). A valve (13) is adjusted to convey sucked up air past the suction turbine (3). The brush can be round, oval, oblong or square, with rigid or flexible edges.
