The mechanism moves the seat of a wheelchair accommodating a cripple in and out of a vehicle. The vehicle has a seat support plate mounted on the floor which can be raised and lowered. The mechanism comprises an arm (14,14') slewing about an axis (Z) which can be tilted in a vertical plane between a rest position in the vehicle and one in which transfer takes place between the wheelchair chassis (21) and the arm. The arm can be locked in each position and there is also a lock acting between it and the seat.
