The platform gangways which serve the higher levels of shelves are made from gangways squares which can be raised up like a trap door in sections about horizontal axes. These squares are supported in their functional position on longitudinal beams and/or transverse bars yet can be securely locked in their upright position out of the way. Since the platform gangways are normally made of square grid sections set one behind the other the structural expense is kept to a min. The gangway squares which form the platform gangways are designed to move about axes of articulation which are aligned across the longitudinal axis of the service gangways so that not only the shelf area on the first floor is made accessible but also a barrier is set up in this area to prevent any accidental droppage.
