Water led into the rotating cutter heads is sprayed onto cutting tools with cross cutting heads, or part-cut machines (working in underground galleries). A sliding ring sealing unit (5) is sited between a rotating cutter head (2) and a carrier (4), coaxially embracing the cutter head mounting (3). The superimposed annular surfaces on this seal off a central annular channel, which has holes leading out from it into the fixed and rotating part of the carrier or cutter head. Water is conducted to the cutting tools in such a way that damage to sensitive parts is reliably prevented.
