401,675. Two- and four-stroke cycle engines. SLOAN, J. J. E., Holmfield House, Mossley Hill, Liverpool. April 11, 1932, No. 10394. [Class 7 (ii).] In two- and four-stroke single-acting and four-stroke double-acting compression-ignition engines combustion products are transferred by a bye-pass f from a cylinder a in which the piston is on its working stroke, and before the exhaust valve opens, to a cylinder c in which the inlet valve has closed and air is being compressed. The bye-passes may be controlled by mechanically-actuated valves. Blowers may be used in the induction and exhaust manifolds. In four-stroke engines the bye-passes may remain open between aspirating and exhausting cylinders.
