The fastener joins the ends of a toothed plastic belt contg. a tension-resistant inlay. It comprises a lower die (1), whose central area (1b) can be heated, with recesses(8) shaped to accommodate the belt teeth (7). The upper die has an aperture (2b) above the heated area of the lower die. A pressure-operated and heated punch (3) works in the aperture and the belt ends (5a, 5b) are inserted between the dies so as to overlap under the punch. Heating and the downward pressure of the punch weld them together.
