Leakage positioning in concrete encased pipework - is determined by detecting freon gas permeating concrete from pipe leak

Certain parts of building water supply and heating system piping are often encased in concrete whose thickness varies considerably. The position of a leak is determined by the detection of Freon gas introduced into the system and which rapidly permeates through the concrete. A water pipe system encased in concrete is emptied and refilled with air or water into which difluorodichloromethane or sulphurhexafluoride has been introduced to dissolve in the water. The mixt. passes into suspected faulty pipework and any leakage is detected by gas detector since the gas generated passes rapidly through the concrete.
