The pneumatic lifting and balancing device roughly has the shape of a simple pulley or rope-tackle block. The device contains a rope drum (20) on which a rope (40) can be wound or unwound. The rope-drum shaft (21) is connected to a pinion (31) which meshes with a rack (32). The rack is connected to the piston (33) of a pneumatic drive device. The air pressure behind the piston can be set in such a way that it balances the weight of an object hung on the load hook (42) so that this object can be moved up and down in a virtually weightless manner. <IMAGE>
