PURPOSE:To obtain the title compounds, useful as raw materials of pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals etc., in one step in a short period, by the reaction of a beta- picoline or a chloro-beta-picoline, chlorine, and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in gas phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a fluoride of a specific metal element and a diluent. CONSTITUTION:A pyridine compound of formula I (X<1>, Y<1> are H or Cl), chlorine, and hydrogen fluoride are made to react in gas phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a fluoride of at least one metal element selected from Al, Cr, Fe and Ni (e.g. AlF3, CrF3, FeF2, NiF3, their hydrates, etc.) and an inert diluent (e.g. an organic solvent comprising halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. chloroform; an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen) to give chloro-beta-trifluoromethylpyridines of formula II (X<2>, Y<2> are H or Cl; at least one of them is Cl) in one step in a short period. |
