Device for detecting the speed and imbalance of a programme controlled washing machine drum journalled for rotation about a horizontal shaft has a drive pulley mounted on the shaft and provided on the side facing away from the drum with segments arranged alternately as light and dark areas. Areas are scanned by a photo-electric cell of the reflective type and located at a radial distance corresp. to r/2 from the centre of the pulley. Cell is associated with a differential element which is interconnected with the washing machine programming device. Pref. the cell is mounted on the inner face of the housing of the washing machine and the segments are located as alternating white and black area configuration on an adhesive foil which may be attached to the pulley.
