Refuse and/or sewage sludge is converted into compost in a covered building which is subdivided into several floors, each split by longitudinal partitions into cells. At one end, the raw material is charged into the cells by vertical screw conveyors and fresh air is admitted through blowers. Paddle wheels run along racks on the walls to turn the material over and take it to the chutes at the other end. Exhausters remove the waste air at that end and press it through an earth filter which covers the flat roof of the building. Such a covered building speeds up the digestion period for the compost and can be a very light structure because of its subdivision into cells.
|
