A single optical fibre (1) butts against a planar waveguide (4) at a coupling position (5), to which an outgoing fibre (2) and a decoupling fibre (3) are joined. All the optical fibres are of sheathed type with relatively thick sheaths (11, 21, 31). The waveguide is made of a transparent plastics that is resistant to ageing, and the (u) coupler is built on a substrate. Fasteners (5, 6), secure the fibres to the substrate, and at the coupling position the waveguide is of square section with its edge length the same as the core diameter of the sheathed fibre(s). Depending on the desired decoupling, the waveguide splits up into parts (4A, 4B), the first part (4A) leading to the continuation of the sheathed fibre (2). Thus the input and output coupling factors can be independent of one another.
|
