PURPOSE:To obtain silicon carbide fine powder in a high yield by adding a specified molar ratio of calcium oxide to a mixture of silicon oxide powder and carbon powder followed by heating under a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Silicon oxide powder and carbon powder are mixed in a predetermined ratio, and to the mixture is added calcium oxide in an amount of 0.005- 0.06mol per mol of silicon oxide. The resulting mixture is reacted by heating at about 1,300-1,600 deg.C under a nonoxidizing atmosphere to form silicon carbide powder. This reaction product may be roasted in air and washed with hydrofluoric acid to remove residual carbon and silica. By this method silicon carbide powder of 1-2mu or less is obtd. at a relatively low temp. in a high yield. |
