The manually operable electric switch (19 includes a control lever (2) pivoted at (3) to control the movement of a longitudinally slidable rod (11) which closes a microswitch (19) when the applied force is within a predetermined range and opens the switch (19) when the force is below or above this range. The initial movement of the rod (11) is controlled solely by a spring (13), but when an enlargement (12) on the rod (11) moves into contact with a ring (14), it moves away from a shoulder (21) and further movement is controlled by the combined effect of the spring (13) and a spring (15) acting on the ring (14). Engagement of the enlargement (12) with the ring (14) coincides with entry of a roller (16) or an actuating arm (17) of the microswitch (19) into a recess (22) in the rod (11) to operate the microswitch (19) and the contacts of the switch are therefore opened for an applied force either less than or greater than that required to bring the enlargement (12) into engagement with the ring (14).
