The drive is partic. for the printing hammer of a typewriter or similar machine, which has a type carrier with with sprung tines for the characters. An adjustment is provided for the hammer drive, or return mechanism, to match the printing energy required to be exerted on the paper. The return mechanism is formed by a series of buffer springs (26-29) in the past of a boss (25) on a component (24), moving forward with the hammer (3). The component is adjustable so as to bring it into contact with a variable number of buffer springs.
