Prodn. of blast-furnace coke with increased mechanical strength is carried out by (a) mixing finely divided coal with a finely divided Gp. IV or VIII metal or Gp. IV metal oxide, and (b) coking the mixt. The metal or oxide can be added in an amt. of 0.1-10 wt.%. Pref. additives are TiO and TiO2, used in an amt. of 0.1-5.0 wt.%. Coal with a volatile content of 32.2 wt.% and an ash content of 5.4 wt.% (MF basis) was mixed with (a) no additive, (b) 0.5% TiO2, (c) 1.0% TiO2, (d) 2.5% TiO2, and coked at 950 degrees C for 18 hr. The prod. was subjected to a drum test (DIN 51717) and the proportion passing a 40 mm mesh was measured. Results were as follows: (a) 68.7, (b) 75.5, (c) 75.9, (d) 78.9 wt.%. Resulting coke has significantly increased attrition resistance.
|
