A process of producing boron trichloride comprises contacting borate ester with chlorine in a reactor in the presence of a free-radical initiator at a temperature of from 20 DEG C to 100 DEG C and simultaneously removing gaseous products of the chlorination reaction from the reactor, the mole ratio of chlorine to bromate ester introduced into the reactor being from 5.5:1 to 7.5:1. |
