Phthalimide derivs. (I,R1,R2 = Et, iso-pr; X1,X2 = H,Cl, Me, but not R2=R2=H) were prepd. by reaction of phthalic anhydride derivs. (II) with aniline derivs. (III) . I had agrochem. fungicidal activity against pellicularia sasakii and phizoctonia solani. Thus, a mixt. of 16.2 g 2-methylphthalic anhydride and 16.4 g 2,6-diethylaniline in EtOH was stirred 30 min, 0.5 g p-toluene sulfonic acid added, and the whole refluxed 2 hr to give 24.5 g N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-2-methyl phthalimide.
