PREPARATION OF STARTING MATERIAL FOR MANUFACTURING CARBON MATERIAL

PURPOSE:To prepare the title starting material from coal type heavy oil and easily recover alcohols and solvent by mixing the heavy oil with alcohols and a low b.p. solvent sol. in the oil and alcohols; agitating the mixt. at ordinary temp.; and separation-removing precipitates formed. CONSTITUTION:Coal type heavy oil such as coal tar is mixed with low b.p. alcohols and one or more kinds of solvents each having a b.p. of 200 deg.C or below and sol. in the oil and alcohols. By agitating this mixt. at ordinary temp. quinoline insol. matter can be precipitated as stable solid granules. The precipitates are separation- removed by filtration, and the alcohols and the solvent are recovered by atmospheric distillation. The coal type heavy oil freed of the alcohols and the solvent is then treated according to the purpose to prepare starting material for manufacturing a high quality carbon material.
