The bulk material flows through the through-flow hopper (17) onto a vibrating separating plate (1) through which air flows. On this separating plate (1), the particles of lower specific weight float upwards, and in the process lose contact with the transporting separating plate and move to the lower plate edge to leave the stone separator via the lightweight part discharge (4). By contrast, the particles of higher specific weight, that is to say the stones, which still have sufficient contact with the separating plate (1), move to the upper plate edge and leave the stone separator through the heavy part discharge (3). If, however, an interruption of the continuous bulk material feed occurs, the through-flow hopper (17) is emptied so that it is pulled upwards somewhat by the spring (13) via the cable pull (15). In the process the spring (13) moves the angle lever (11), so that the blocking strip (10) is lowered. No more bulk material can thus leave the stone separator through the discharge (3). Lightweight bulk material is therefore also not undesirably lost, as was previously the case when the bulk material feed was interrupted and under the unfavourable conditions occurring as the separator plate was emptying. <IMAGE>
