An austenitic stainless steel consisted essentially of about 20% to 40% Ni, 14% to 21% Cr, about 6% to 12% Mo, up to 0.2% C, up to 2% Mn, 0.01% to 0.080% Ce, 0.005% to 0.015% Ca, up to about 0.006% and the remainder essentially all Fe. Also disclosed is a method for making the alloy described above wherein the finishing temperature of hot-rolled strip is maintained around or above 982oC to reduce edge cracking.
