Self-extinguishing polyacrylonitrile is prepd. by (i) adding high brominated aromatic cpds., (I) and a ground paste mixt. of Sb2O3 with a sulphonamide, (II) to a polyacrylonitrile soln. in dimethyl formamide and (ii) precipitating the homogenised compsn. in a 50% aq. dimethyl formamide soln. Preliminary grinding of Sb2O3 with (II) prevents Sb2O3 coagulation in the polyacrylonitrile soln. and enables homogeneous distn. (II) dissolves in the aq. pptn. baths and the final articles are free from (II).
