Lignite powder stored in silos by means of carbon dioxide is rendered inert by air-tight closure of the silos. The lignite particles have a size of 200 mu m, and form explosive mixts. with air. The powder is filled into the silo by means of compressed air which leaves the silo through a filter. Auto-oxidn. occurring in the silo leads to formation of CO, and residence time of the powder in the silo is normally is not >48 hours. The necessity for supplying an inert gas to the silo is avoided. Pressure in the silo remains unaltered. Safety is achieved at low cost. The process can be applied also to the storage of a mixt. of wheat rice and barley.
