Paper web measuring feeding properties of moving paper web - using web thickness along moving web and using deviation from standard thickness as indicator

Paper web feeding properties are measured by taking a series of samples of the paper and measuring their thickness. Deviation of thickness from a reference value is taken as a measure of the feeding properties of the web. Pref. the sampling is effected using mechanical, optical or acoustic sensors and the sampling in addition to being effected at spaced longitudinal locations of the web are also carried out transversely of the web. Transverse sampling is averaged. Used in mfg. paper bags from webs fed continuously to a paper bag mfg. machine. Controlling feed prevents paper web breaking and increases effective mfg. rate.
