PURPOSE:To obtain an ester useful as a plasticizer, by adding water to the system, wherein an organic acid is reacted with an alcohol in the presence of a specific catalyst, to hydrolyze the catalyst under heating, by neutralizing the remaining acidic substances with an alkali, followed by purifying the crude ester. CONSTITUTION:An organic acid or its anhydride and an alcohol are reacted in the presence of an organometallic compound catalyst, preferably a titanium or tin compound, by the conventional method. Water in an amount of 5-50wt% based on the crude ester is added to the reaction system to hydrolyze the catalyst under heating, preferably at 60-98 deg.C, and an alkali is added to neutralize the remaining acidic substances. The resulting crude ester is then purified by the conventional method to give a high-quality ester. This method permits the complete hydrolysis of the catalyst, ready separation of the neutralization product from the aqueous phase and easy rinsing, little loss of the ester in the phase, and improved quality of the product. |
