A gas turbine is coupled to an electrical generator through a reduction gear. A further gear is incorporated between the reduction gear and the turbine. The input shaft (5) from the turbine has a geared sleeve (6) which turns with but can slide on it. The output shaft (9) has a gear (8) meshing with a gear (12) on a layshaft (10) and a second gear (11) on the layshaft meshes with an idler gear (7) free to rotate round the input shaft. In one position the sleeve (6) drives the output gear (8) directly. In the other position it drives the idler (7) driving the output through the layshaft.
